Active Parenting

Hello and happy weekend! I hope you had a great week! Today is going to be about Michael Popkin's take on active parenting as well as what our job is as a parent and how we can help our children.  Parenting is a great responsibility. Our job is to protect and prepare a child to survive and thrive in the world that they are going to live in. As children are trying to learn and grow or become "little scientists" it is important to be PROACTIVE in that. Use that as opportunities to help them. It is important to know that children are imperfect just as we are. They have needs that need met and sometimes when it is not being met children have a mistaken approach and will manifest that in different ways. When this occurs, the parents' response to it is so important to getting them back on track. I'd like to share some of the examples we learned about with the child/teen's need, the child's mistake approach, and how the parent might respond.  Child's/Teen...

Finances, Following God's Will, and Finding Opportunities

Hello! To start off I want to talk about  following God's will . There is a quote that I really love from Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf in his talk called "Fourth Floor, Last Door." He says,  " We cannot force God to comply with our desires—no matter how right we think we are or how sincerely we pray. Consider the experience of Paul, who pleaded with the Lord multiple times for relief from a personal trial—what he called “a thorn in the flesh.” But that was not God’s will. Eventually, Paul realized that his trial was a blessing, and he thanked God for not answering his prayers the way he had hoped. 6 No, the purpose of faith is not to  change  God’s will but to empower us to  act on  God’s will. Faith is trust—trust that God sees what we cannot and that He knows what we do not. 7  Sometimes, trusting our own vision and judgment is not enough ."   There have been times where I feel like I know what path I should be taking and that things will l...

The Importance of Communication

Welcome to another post! Today is going to be about the importance of communication and David D. Burns "5 secrets of effective communication."  Communication is a vital part of everyday life because we use it all the time. Whether it is for work, school, and especially in our relationships with family and friends, it is important to learn to be a good and effective communicator. Without good communication, there is room for a lot of misunderstandings and often times causes problems that could have been resolved through talking and communicating about it. I want to walk through David D. Burns 5 secrets of effective communication and explain his techniques. 1. Disarming technique- This is where we need to find the " kernel of truth" in others' argument, which means finding truth in what they are saying. Sometimes when we are being defensive, it often looks more like an offensive stance. When we set down our defenses, we are able to disarm them by disarming ourse...

Truth and Stress

Welcome back to another blog post! This week is going be prioritizing truth and entertaining true thoughts and also about stress within the family. I hope that there is something that is a helpful takeaway for you and that you are able to learn something about the things I studied and learned about this week!  To start off, I want to talk about our brains and a little bit about how they work. In our frontal lobes, that is where we use intellect, logic, and problem-solving. Our limbic system is more emotionally oriented, and it is where our "autopilot" mode resides. As we go down, our brain stem is what handles metabolic responses such as heart rate, breathing, blood pressure etc. Why is this relevant? Well, when we sense a perception of danger, our limbic system is what takes over. We turn to autopilot and tend to think more emotionally. Anxiety and depression are two things that we hear a lot about today and are very common now. Anxiety is actually a natural, normal, and ev...
